What is it that you give?

What is it that you place in the offering plate every Sunday?

 It is a symbol.

 It is a symbol of your past.

It is a symbol of the years you spent in school – offered to God.

It is a symbol of the sacrifices you made to learn a skill, a trade a vocation.

It is a symbol of the hours you spent in learning how to do your work well.

It is symbol of the past preparations to get where you are now – as humble as it might be.

It is a symbol of your past.

+++

It is a symbol of your life today

It is symbol of the need for food you have today.

It is a symbol of the need you have for shelter.

It is a symbol of the desire you have to care for family.

It is a symbol of your desire to honor your friends.

It is a symbol of your life today

+++

It is a symbol of your tomorrow.

It is a symbol of your hope for the future.

It is a symbol of your energies focused on tomorrow.

It is a symbol of your retirement.

It is a symbol of your health.

It is a symbol of your vacation.

It is a symbol of your children’s education.

It is a symbol of your tomorrow.

As you place a part of your salary, your paycheck - that “piece of the pie” you are giving a piece of your past to God.

 You give God a piece of your today in thanksgiving.

 You give God a piece of your future in grateful anticipation of eternal life.

 What is it that you place in the Offering plate every Sunday? – It is you.

Peace,

The Rev. Dr. Gerald Sevick
